Step 1
To begin with, apply for a marriage registration at the registry office of the country where the marriage will be concluded. You will be asked to collect the required package of documents in accordance with local legislation. As a rule, it is standard in all countries and includes: a passport or other identity document; a certificate stating that you are not married (or a divorce certificate); parental permission to travel abroad (persons under the age of 21). Ask what additional documents a specific country requires.
Step 2
Please note that in some countries, consular approval is required to marry. To do this, you must have on hand a "marriage invitation" (bride / groom visa), issued in the country of residence of your future spouse. If a foreign citizen does not have such a document, then the marriage can be declared illegal in the country where the foreign citizen is from. At the insistence of the parties, the marriage will nevertheless be registered with a note that the bride and groom have been acquainted with the current procedure.
Step 3
Contact the Ministry of the authority that issued this or that document of yours in order to affix the apostille on the original (i.e. legalize). After that, the documents must be certified with the seal of the country where you are going to marry a foreigner.
Step 4
Explore the specific prohibitions on marriage in the country of your future spouse. For example, if your other half is a citizen of Greece, then keep in mind that in this country it is strictly forbidden for intelligence officers and police to marry foreigners. For German citizens, it is necessary to obtain from the internal affairs bodies a "Permit to register a marriage abroad", which confirms the absence of circumstances that prevent marriage.
