Step 1

In its most general form, conflicts can be divided into three types: interpersonal, intergroup and intrapersonal. There are also combinations of these forms of contradiction, for example, in a conflict of one person with a group.

Step 2

Interpersonal conflicts arise between two or more people. For example, between wife and husband, between mother-in-law and husband, between children. Intrapersonal conflicts are characteristic of one person: he can plunge into contradictions for a long time about whether to get married, whether to get a divorce, whether to stay at work or find a new one. Intergroup conflicts arise between different groups of people: between family clans or between departments in a company.

Step 3

For the most part, psychologists and psychotherapists deal with the problem of intrapersonal conflicts. From conflictology, they take only an understanding of how the external environment can enhance or weaken intrapersonal conflicts. Or how contradictions in the soul of one person affect his relationship with relatives and colleagues. Interpersonal and intergroup conflicts are more often in the field of view of professional conflictologists. They are trying to find common patterns in the development of conflicts, ways to resolve the contradictions underlying them.

Step 4

Methods for resolving conflicts can be conditionally divided into radical and compromise. The former can lead to the severing of relations and business ties with the recognition of the incompatibility of positions on a number of important positions. It is a special art to end a relationship correctly against a background of conflict. However, much more often the parties to the conflict are interested in finding a compromise or a solution that would suit both parties. Often, the task of the conflictologist in such situations is to find out the requirements of the conflicting parties to each other and convey them in the correct form to each of the parties to the dispute.

Step 5

A conflictologist must be a good psychologist. While conflict is studied across disciplines ranging from history to mathematics, it is important to be able to understand the attitudes of people under the influence of stress. Often, in a conflict, people cannot correctly express their attitude to the situation. And it is important for a conflictologist to find an approach to each participant in a disputable situation in order to establish interaction between them in search of mutual understanding.
