How should you measure your basal temperature?

Basal body temperature is the lowest body temperature that excludes the influence of physical activity and third-party factors on oneself, i.e. this is the body temperature at complete rest. It is measured in the mouth, rectum, or vagina.

It is necessary to measure basal temperature immediately after waking up. Getting out of bed, stretching or talking is absolutely forbidden, because this will greatly distort the results. It is better to put the thermometer on the bedside table at the head of the bed in order to immediately start measuring the temperature after waking up. On the same nightstand, you can put a notebook or graph, where you will immediately note the measured temperature. Start tracking it from the first day of your cycle. Moreover, this must be done every day, strictly at the same time.

To measure basal temperature, you can use any thermometers we are used to, but preference should be given to moisture-proof digital thermometers. It is not worth placing a mercury thermometer at the head of the bed, because it can be easily brushed off with your hand and broken.

Basal temperature during ovulation

Make a monthly basal temperature chart, noting any ailments and illnesses. As a rule, during menstruation, the temperature is slightly increased - about 37 degrees, but with the end of menstruation, it drops to 36, 5-36, 8 degrees. During ovulation, there is a sharp jump in temperature by 0.4 degrees, which lasts for 3 days and returns to normal. Tracking this jump will help you know when the days are favorable for conception. An increased basal temperature a few days before menstruation can be a sign of pregnancy.
