One of the ways to determine pregnancy before a delay is to measure the basal temperature. If a woman is planning a pregnancy, then she has heard about him at least once in her life. Basal temperature tends to change its value depending on the state of the body. But without a definite study of the rules for measuring basal temperature and determining reference values, it is not possible to find out about pregnancy.
What is basal temperature?
Basal is the body temperature of a woman, measured at rest in the morning. This method of determining ovulation or pregnancy will be much more accurate if a woman can keep a schedule of daily temperature measurements for at least 2-3 cycles.
The essence of basal temperature measurement is the reaction of the hormone progesterone on the woman's body. Progesterone has a hyperthermic effect of increasing body temperature. And the surge of this hormone occurs at the time of ovulation. When pregnancy occurs, progesterone will also be kept high.
For women with a history of hyperprolactinemia, the basal temperature measurement technique will not be informative.
Errors still take place, but basal temperature measurement is very often used in planning not only the pregnancy itself, but also planning the sex of the child.
How is basal temperature measured?
To measure basal temperature correctly, you must always adhere to certain rules. After all, temperature is a rather dynamic indicator and any factor can have an impact on the result. In order to measure the basal temperature correctly, you need to strictly adhere to the following rules:
- Basal temperature is measured in the mouth, vagina or rectum. For measurements to determine pregnancy, rectal is the best way to measure. It is especially important to stick to measurements in only one way at all times.
- It is advisable to use a mercury thermometer, but an electronic one is also possible. The device must not be changed during the entire research period. It is advisable to keep it next to the bed so that, if necessary, take it without much effort.
- You need to measure basal temperature for at least 5 minutes.
- Basal temperature is measured in the morning, immediately after waking up at the same time. You cannot get up before the measurement.
- You should not stop measuring basal temperature during menstruation.
- All results should be noted on the graph.
What should be the basal temperature during pregnancy?
With the beginning of a new cycle, the basal temperature drops to 36.4 degrees. Throughout the first phase of the cycle, the temperature is kept at 36, 4-36, 7 degrees. Before ovulation, the temperature drops sharply to 36, 3 ° C, and then suddenly rises to 37 degrees. Basalt temperature up to 37.4 ° C is considered the norm during ovulation. For 12-16 days, this temperature is stable, but before the start of a new cycle, it decreases again.
If pregnancy has occurred, then the basal temperature does not decrease, but remains at the level of 37, 0-37, 4 ° C throughout all 9 months.
