How did emo come about
The emo subculture was born, as it often happened in the second half of the 20th century, from the musical movement. In the 1980s, a subgenre called emocore separated from hard rock in America. The first emo were vegetarians, they did not use alcohol or drugs, they quit smoking. The music itself was distinguished by heightened emotionality, the vocalist often broke into a scream, telling about very sad things. The most common problematic topics that the texts in emo-core touched upon were about love, pain and death. Quite like regular rock, doesn't it? But emo have significant differences.
Emo music is much more emotional, as its very name suggests. Emo is nothing more than an abbreviation for emotional. In no genre do vocalists scream or cry into the microphone as desperately as they do in emo music. That is why adherents of the emo subculture are, more often than not, adolescents who are characterized by especially strong fluctuations in emotions.
Emo teens don't hesitate to show their feelings and cry. This is even one of the signs by which it is easy to distinguish a true adherent of the subculture, in other words, tru-emo (true). That is why the main colors of emo are black (depressive emotions) and acid pink (open expression of feelings and screaming). It is not uncommon for emo to get piercings on the face, which go well with their traditional makeup with black arrows.
The main feature of the emo subculture is the absence of barriers to expressing one's feelings. Emo are not afraid to be themselves, to show their both positive and negative feelings. You can cry, or you can laugh, but what you can't do is hide your feelings inside yourself. True emo people believe that in order to feel that they belong to this subculture, it is not necessary to dye their hair or do special makeup. The essence of emo is in the perception of the world.
For those who want to join emo
If you want to become part of the emo subculture, then try to stop hiding your emotions and mood first. This does not mean that you need to be a simple person who spreads everything to others, as if in spirit. But you must respect your keen and deep feelings by showing them, not hiding them.
The emo style is pretty flamboyant. These are, for the most part, black things, among which there are several pink details. The black and white check is also a characteristic pattern. Sometimes emo wear leather belts and rivets, as this is still one of the rock directions.
Get to know emo music better. This is not to say that the style has icons that have defined it and would have remained on the pedestal long enough, as is the case in other musical directions. Just listen to different emo music and see if you find something for yourself.
