Some mothers are forced to supplement the baby with formula. This can happen for various reasons: a lack of breast milk in the mother herself, the specific features of the baby's digestion, in which supplementation with a specialized milk formula alleviates his condition, and others. But in any case, the question of feeding the baby with mixtures should be approached very carefully.

Instructions

Step 1

When deciding on supplementation, make sure that the baby is actually lacking in breast milk. Signs indicating this may be: insufficient weight gain in the child, rare (less than 6 times a day) urination of the baby with a dark color of urine and its rather strong odor. Normally, the baby's urine is very light and almost odorless.

Step 2

Measure the amount of breast milk your baby sucks out during feeding. This can be done by weighing the baby in a diaper or diaper before feeding, and then in the same diapers after feeding. In this case, you should not change a wet diaper or a diaper that the baby soaked in between weighings, for dry ones.

Step 3

Feed the baby with milk formulas if measurements show that the baby does not receive the required amount of breast milk during breastfeeding. The average amount of milk consumption per feeding by a child of a certain age and weight can be checked with the pediatrician or refer to the corresponding tables.

Step 4

Feed your baby only after breastfeeding and only with a spoon. Otherwise, being not too hungry, the baby may refuse to breastfeed after receiving the formula, and when feeding from the bottle will prefer light saturation from the opening of the nipple of the bottle, rather than sucking milk from the mother's breast.

Step 5

Introduce the infant formula into the baby's diet gradually, starting with 10 ml in one feeding, gradually doubling the amount of supplementary feeding day by day, bringing it to the required volume. If it is necessary to supplement several times a day, no more than one supplementary supplement can be administered daily.

Step 6

Prepare the formula in accordance with the recommendations given for its preparation - they are indicated by the manufacturer on the box or can with the formula.
