Double standards is a term that denotes the difference in the assessment of similar or identical actions performed by different people. Some judge others in a biased manner and allow personal attitudes towards individuals to influence their views on their actions.
Both whole groups of people, who are united by any characteristic, and individual individuals can suffer from biased assessment. There are several reasons for one person's biased judgment about the actions and words of others.
Perception
Double standards occur when a person considers two identical actions of people performed in different scenery. Due to various circumstances that could not in any way force these individuals to do this and not otherwise, as well as because of their personal characteristics, their actions look different to the biased viewer.
For example, two people commit an equally despicable act - they set up a colleague. Only one of them had previously quarreled with him in front of the collective, while the other did everything quietly. To some, the actions of the first person will seem more honest: he immediately showed his attitude. Others will believe that the second individual could have committed meanness unintentionally, because there were no visible prerequisites for him.
Also, perception can depend on who is on whose side. One and the same mass event - some kind of collision or conflict, different people will describe in different ways.
If they are on opposite sides of the barricades, their stories can be completely different.
Attitude
The assessment of actions or words also depends on the personal sympathy of the judge. The evaluator can be softer and more condescending to the actions of his friend or his own actions. Cowardice can be regarded as caution, dependence can be called an innocent weakness, a tendency to gossip - sociability.
At the same time, others are sometimes not so kind to their enemies or strangers. If they are touched in transport, then, for sure, on purpose, because of bad manners and aggressiveness. And if a stranger is really out of sorts, it’s not because he had a bad day or grief, but because of his complete inadequacy.
Depending on how you feel about the person, you can praise or condemn him for the same thing. You forgive some people a lot, while others you immediately write down in the status of enemies. This is double standards. They cannot be avoided, because a person cannot be indifferent to everything and be absolutely objective.
It happens that the evaluator subconsciously adds a few more committed in the past to one act of a person, which automatically increases his guilt.
Equality
Finally, the crudest and most widespread expression of double standards is discrimination against entire groups of the population. It can take place, for example, according to nationality, race, religion, sexual orientation, social status of people.
For some reason, what a person does is, for some reason, aggravated by the color of his skin, who he works and how much money he has. Such double standards will disappear only when all people recognize the right of others to their own choice, and also do not judge others by their appearance.
