Necessary

  • - a cut of jersey or fleece for the outside of the diaper and a cut of silk or lining for the inside
  • - sewing accessories
  • - elastic band
  • - Velcro

Instructions

Step 1

Make a paper pattern for a disposable diaper of the correct size.

Step 2

Attach the paper drawing to the fabric and circle the pattern with chalk or a piece of dry soap. Cut out one outer and one inner diaper. Be sure to make 1-1.5 cm seam allowances on all sides, and on the outside of the front part, make another 1 cm allowance on top to sew the diaper nicely.

Step 3

Seam the edges of the cut-out parts of the diaper with either a zigzag sewing machine or overcast seams by hand.

Step 4

Fold both pieces together, right sides inward. Sew the sides that will surround the baby's legs together. Turn the diaper right side out and iron the stitches well.

Step 5

Fold the diaper in half to determine where the elastic will be sewn in. From the fold line of the diaper, it is necessary to measure 12 cm if the size of a disposable diaper taken as sample no. 2, and 14 cm if the size of sample no. 4. At a measured distance, draw a line parallel to the fold line of the diaper from one side to the other. From the obtained point, measure 1, 5-2 cm and draw a line parallel to the line of the side edge. Take the exact same measurements and lines on the back of the diaper. A line along the edge is sewn on both sides with a sewing machine. Between the side fold line and the stitching made, there is a compartment for the elastic.

Step 6

Insert the rubber bands into the side holes with a pin. Sew both ends of the elastic to the fabric where the elastic stitch begins. The sides of the diaper should tuck up a little.

Step 7

After having sewn in both elastic bands, turn the diaper to the wrong side. Sew the top of the diaper from the back side. Then, turn the diaper right out.

Step 8

At the top of the front side of the diaper, fold the remaining stock of face fabric twice to the wrong side. Sew the right and wrong sides together. Sew on the Velcro as needed.
