According to statistics, every fourth woman in Russia is subjected to physical violence every year, and every second woman is subjected to psychological pressure. Moreover, there is no direct dependence on the social status and financial situation of the family.
Within the family, quarrels and conflicts of interest inevitably arise. Domestic violence differs from a one-time domestic conflict in its frequency and multiplicity of types. There are the following types of intra-family violence:
- Physical violence. This is the infliction of physical harm on a person, expressed in beatings, slaps, blows.
- Psychological abuse. This is the manipulation of the victim with the aim of forcing her to do something by means of threats of physical violence, blackmail, accusations, intimidation, humiliation in public, criticism, isolation from the outside world.
- Economic violence. Material pressure, which manifests itself either in the deprivation of funds, or in total control over expenses, or in the prohibition of going to work or study.
- Sexual abuse. Compulsion to sex in any form against the will of a person.
Any person in the family - a child or an adult - can be subjected to severe pressure. Statistics show that in 95% of cases, women and children become victims of family harassment.
Signs of domestic violence
- cyclicality, repetition of scenes of family terror;
- a combination of several (or all at once) types of violence;
- the inability for the suffering party to resolve the conflict on its own without outside help.
Tyrant behavior
The reasons for the tendency to despotism are rooted in the social and psychological problems of a person. Most often, people with low self-esteem resort to this kind of behavior.
- They assert themselves by humiliating another person and demonstrating their power over him.
- Today's tyrants, as a rule, either themselves in childhood experienced arbitrariness on the part of a loved one, or inherited such a scheme of family relations.
- The genetic predisposition of the tyrant contributes to the manifestation of such traits as aggressiveness, dominance, impulsivity.
- A special role is played by belonging to a culture in which diktat is allowed as a means of resolving intra-family disputes.
Victim behavior
The behavior of the suffering party (victim) is also conditioned by the peculiarities of her psyche, for example:
- People with low self-esteem are often the targets of harassment.
- The victim of violence has adopted a similar stereotype of similar behavior in the family from early childhood.
- The suffering side is afraid to break the union for fear of losing material wealth or social status. In this case, psychological and economic dependence on another person often indicates the victim's infantilism.
The consequences of domestic violence
Scenes of violence for all their participants and witnesses are the strongest traumatic factor:
- In addition to bodily injuries of varying severity, mental health is harmed, resulting in psychosomatic illnesses.
- Mental disorders, neurotic symptoms appear: fear, anxiety, depression, irritability.
- The sensitive child's psyche is especially affected. Children, feeling their helplessness, may look for a way out in dubious hobbies and connections. In such families, people usually grow up with an unstable psyche and internal conflicts.
How to deal with domestic violence
If a person has used violence at least once, the probability of a repetition of a similar situation is 95%. Therefore, psychologists advise taking drastic measures right away:
- Stop blaming yourself and look for excuses for the offender's actions.
- Realize that you cannot change a single person if he does not want it himself.
- Inform as many people as possible from your environment about the facts of humiliation.
- Find sympathetic people unknown to the domestic despot, with whom you can live for some time, taking with you documents, keys, necessary things.
- Seek professional help from a psychotherapist, psychologist or specialized center.
But the best way to get rid of recurrences of domestic violence is radical. You need to completely break off relations, find the strength to leave on time, without waiting for the dramatic development of events.
