Instructions

Step 1

The best nutrition for a premature baby is breast milk, but since the condition of children is different, the question of the type of feeding is decided for each child individually. As a rule, premature babies are characterized by high rates of physical development and have a high need for calories. But difficulties may also arise due to the poor functioning of the digestive system of premature babies in the first 2 weeks of life.

Step 2

Start feeding your premature baby with small portions of breast milk. First, give 3 to 5 milliliters with each feeding. Increase the portions a little every day, but at the same time observe the baby very carefully. Add the amount of milk very gradually, as a premature baby can only hold a small portion in the stomach. With the permission of the pediatrician, you can apply the baby to the breast about 2 times a day, all other feedings must be carried out with expressed milk from a bottle.

Step 3

The daily amount of food for a premature baby should be calculated by a pediatrician. As a rule, he makes this calculation according to Rommel's formula: the amount of milk (mixture) for every 100 grams of the child's body weight = 10 + the number of days of life (in milliliters).

The calculation of the required amount of food for children over the age of 10 days can also be carried out according to the volumetric method: the daily amount of food for a child aged 10-14 days = 1/7 of the body weight, at the age of 2-3 weeks = 1/6 of the body weight, at the age 1 month = 1/5 body weight.

Step 4

In addition, the amount of food that a premature baby consumes depends on his condition. If you notice that your child's health is deteriorating, be sure to reduce the amount of food.

Step 5

If your baby is bottle-fed, only buy special formulas that are designed for premature babies. They are enriched with all nutrients and minerals necessary for development.

Step 6

The introduction of juices and complementary foods should be carried out only under the supervision of a pediatrician.
