Creating a portrait is one of the most difficult areas in painting. It should be started after the child has mastered the image of different figures, learned to identify the volume of an object using chiaroscuro. Working on a portrait will require your help and tips.

Instructions
Step 1
Place the sitter on a high chair so that the light falls on his face. The background should have a muted or white background. This will make it easier to concentrate on your face.
Step 2
Explain to your child that each person has different facial features. One has big eyes, the other has full lips, someone has a crooked nose. It is important to be able to notice this and try to convey it in a portrait, then only the drawing on paper will resemble the original.
Step 3
Stick a large piece of paper onto an easel or other flat surface. Tell your child how to choose the right composition. If you are going to paint a portrait, do not depict only the head. It is necessary to show the neck and hair, as well as the collar and, if desired, a piece of clothing. This will make the work look harmonious and complete. For a preliminary drawing, offer your child a simple medium-soft pencil so that in case of a mistake, the line can be easily erased with an eraser. Find the center of the composition, draw a vertical line across it. Use horizontal lines to mark the top of the head and the bottom. Draw the child's attention to the shape of the head of the person you are drawing. Try to draw it with a thin line in the form of an oval. Then sketch out the hair and neck.
Step 4
Start drawing parts of the face - nose, mouth, eyes, eyebrows. To do this, you need to draw auxiliary lines. When applying them, remind your child to constantly look at nature and accurately convey the proportions of the face on paper. Draw the top line, which should be at the level of the eyebrows. Draw two lines below to indicate the location of the eyes. The next line will mark the lower border of the nose. Then draw the lips with three lines. After you have marked the face with your child, start drawing the individual parts. Start with the eyes, then move on to the nose and lips. Don't forget to draw your eyebrows.
Step 5
Move on to a more detailed study of the hairstyle and pieces of clothing. It is not necessary to draw all the hair, it is enough to mark individual strands. Indicate secondary details in the picture, such as earrings, beads, glasses, a hairpin on your hair. After the drawing is ready, once again carefully check all the proportions and erase the auxiliary lines with the eraser.
Step 6
Start painting the portrait. For children, pencils or soft pastels work best. Start with the minor details, then move on to the main ones. To add volume to the image, define the light and shadow. Try to work with color on the entire surface of the portrait, otherwise the obsession with one detail will lead to disconnection from the rest. The main parts of the portraits should be drawn clearly, and the secondary parts, such as the collar, and curls in the background should be shaded. Remember to remind your child to get up from work more often and look at the drawing from the side, comparing it with the original. This will make it easier to spot mistakes and fix them.
