The development of a preschooler's speech occurs in several stages. It is believed that a seven-year-old child should be able to present the content of a short text. This requires both a detailed retelling and highlighting the main idea in 2-3 sentences. If a preschooler does not know how to retell a text, then he can be taught this in special classes, either in kindergarten, or in conjunction with a speech therapist.

Step 1

In the first step, teach your child to understand the meaning of the story read and answer questions about the main storyline. Who is the main character? What was he doing? What came of it? The more detailed each educational material is discussed, the greater the effect this stage will bring for the further development of the child's speech.

You can use this technique when reading bedtime stories. A continuation tale is a good tool in developing retelling skills. The next evening, start reading by asking, "Do you remember where we left off yesterday?" The child needs help, reminding him of the main events - in this case, the skill will be formed faster.

Step 2

In the second step, teach your child to independently identify the main idea of the story, which gradually becomes more complicated. If in the first lessons the material contains a clear unified semantic line of development of events “Grandfather planted a turnip. “The turnip has grown …”, then in the future the main plot “overgrows” with many details and additions that are not directly related to the plot of the story and can be confusing.

The task at this stage is to teach how to recognize the main content of a text of any degree of complexity and compare it with the title of a story or fairy tale.

Step 3

In the third step, teach your child to retell the text using support diagrams. You don't have to write a plan, as adults often do. There are enough mini-pictures in which the semantic load of a separate fragment of the text is succinctly displayed. At this stage, you can write out some words that can help the child not get confused in the development of the plot.

Step 4

The last stage is a free retelling of the text without support. Again, we start with simple fairy tales and stories familiar to the kid. It is better to play up the situation, ask the child to tell the story to his mother, rock his brother, etc. You can lay the dolls by telling them stories familiar from a very early age.

Closer to school, introduce retelling into daily practice as an independent activity. Make it a habit for your child to relate after reading what the story was about. It is better to do this twice: immediately after reading and the next day.
