In ancient Greece, there was a goddess of memory Mnemosyne. From her name came the concept of mnemonics, or the art of memorization. Mnemonics develops speech, memory and imagination.

What is mnemonics?

Initially, back in antiquity, mnemonics were used by orators to memorize extensive texts. Indeed, thanks to mnemonics, it is easier to concentrate, attentiveness increases and thoughts do not "scatter".

The meaning of mnemonics is that any word can be drawn, associated with a visual image. You can even imagine a whole story in pictures. The great teacher K. D. Ushinsky believed that for a child to memorize something by ear is not an easy task, while with the help of pictures he can quickly recall even voluminous stories and poems. The most striking example of mnemonics is the phrase “every hunter wants to know where the pheasant is sitting”, thanks to which many have learned the order of colors in the rainbow.

Why do preschoolers need mnemonics?

It is still difficult for a small child to control his attention and memory. Parents often complain of incoherent speech, inability to correctly formulate a sentence by the child, inability to control the tempo and volume of speech. Remembering something abstract for a preschooler is generally a difficult task. Since visual memory prevails in babies, good results are obtained by mnemonics, which speech therapists have been successfully using for many years. Mnemonics also develops speech and associative thinking well.

Why do you think there are always pictures on the lockers in kindergartens? The picture helps the kid remember his locker. This is another example of mnemonics.

In kindergarten, mnemonic tables are often used: pictures depicting an object. After memorizing the names of the objects, the kids are asked to make a sentence of several such pictures. It is advisable to make the pictures themselves in color: the child remembers that the apple is red, the fox is red, and so on. Children perceive mnemonic tables as a game, you can ask them to draw pictures for the story themselves, it will be interesting and fun.

Of course, mnemonics is not the only way to strengthen the memory of preschoolers, and you should not be limited only to it. But it is great at helping to expand vocabulary, release clamps, and develop imagination.

A good memory needs constant training. However, as in any business, the main thing is not to overdo it. Superfluous information, especially the one that will hardly be used, will certainly be erased from memory, and the child may remain irritated and restless.
