Taking vitamins is not included in the mandatory recommendations for the management of pregnancy. An exception is folic acid (B9), the intake of which is recommended to start two months before the planned pregnancy and continue until the end of the first trimester.
Folic acid intake:
- Significantly reduces the risk of fetal abnormalities
- Lays the foundations for vital processes: regeneration of muscle tissue, protection of the baby from damaging factors
- Reduces the risk of developing such diseases in a child after birth as: schizophrenia, depressive disorders, autism and a number of malignant tumors.
- Prevention of complications associated with the placenta.
Researchers have never come to a consensus. One group of experts believes that there is no need to take a multivitamin, it is enough that your food is complete and of high quality.
Other experts, on the other hand, tell us about the many benefits of taking a multivitamin during pregnancy.
It should be noted that a lack of iodine during pregnancy can cause a delay in the mental, mental and motor development of the fetus. Vitamin E has an antioxidant effect, has a positive effect on the course of pregnancy, as it has progesterone-like properties. Vitamin D, Omega_3, iron also have a beneficial effect on the body.
Pregnant women are advised to take multivitamin-mineral complexes in the 1st trimester in case of insufficient nutrition and with severe toxicosis. In other cases - at the discretion of the doctor.
If you nevertheless decide to take a multivitamin, you should stop taking it at 32-33 weeks in order to avoid quick and unnecessary weight gain by the baby.
