Sulfur plug can form in a child due to dust getting into the auricle, blocking the ear canal, swelling and sticking it after interacting with water. Can a child remove the sulfur plug on their own?
Instructions
Step 1
Sulfur plug can be asymptomatic for a long time and not disturb the child. And sometimes, when water gets in, it swells, and you begin to notice how your baby is anxious, tries to reach out with his fingers, his hearing often deteriorates. At the first such symptoms, contact a pediatric ENT specialist.
Step 2
In no case should you try to get the sulfur plug from a child with sharp objects. Do not use needles and pins for this purpose, do not use matches and sharp tweezers. You can injure the child or push the wax further inside. The cork will press on the eardrum, cause pain to the child, and then you will have to call an ambulance.
Step 3
If the sulfur plug is clearly visible, take a warm heating pad, wrap it with a soft towel and place the child with this ear for 20 minutes warm. If the sulfur is fresh, it will gradually soften and flow out of the ear. Remove its remnants with a cotton swab dipped in an alcoholic boric acid solution. If the edge of a dried sulfuric plug is peeping out of the ear, then such heating will not help, it is better to immediately contact the clinic.
Step 4
If the child is more than two years old, then use A-Cerumen drops, which are sold in the pharmacy, to remove sulfur plugs. They contain surfactants that do not increase surface tension. Getting inside the sulfur plug, the drops dissolve it, preventing swelling. They are safe and do not irritate the mucous membranes. Gently drip a few drops into the ear, after warming them in the palms to body temperature. Let it sit for a couple of minutes. Then wash off the remnants of the sulfur plug with a solution of boric acid. To completely remove the plug, carry out the procedure twice a day for 3 or 5 days. This drug is much more effective than oil drops, which are often used by parents in such cases.
Step 5
When using drops, do not insert the nose of the bottle too deep into the ear canal. Use A-Cerumen only if the child does not have allergies, hypersensitivity, membrane perforation or otitis media. For these conditions, see your doctor.
