About 15% of children aged 5-12 years face such a problem as bedwetting. Urinary incontinence makes it very difficult for a child to adapt to children's groups and families, and adolescents often experience medical and social conflicts on this basis.
Causes of infantile enuresis
There are two types of infantile enuresis. In primary incontinence, urinary incontinence occurs during sleep, when the child does not wake up at a time when his bladder is full. Secondary develops due to acquired or congenital diseases.
Immaturity or retention of the bladder and nervous system can be the cause of enuresis. In this case, various neuropsychiatric disorders may manifest, for example, attention deficit disorder and behavior disorder.
Also, stress can affect the appearance of this disease. For example, a change of scenery, separation from mom, quarrels in the family circle.
Heredity has a great influence. If the child's parents had the same problem in childhood, most likely, the baby will also face it.
The cause of infantile enuresis may be a violation of the secretion of antidiuretic hormone. It regulates the amount of urine produced. The more it is in the blood, the less fluid is formed. Normally, this process occurs at night, but with incontinence, everything is exactly the opposite.
Diseases of the genitourinary system can also cause incontinence. This can be a narrowing of the urethra or a small bladder capacity.
Treatment of infantile enuresis
Treatment will depend on the cause of your urinary incontinence. More often the disease is diagnosed and treated on an outpatient basis. Hospitalization is generally not required unless the urinary bladder or kidney disease is causing the bedwetting.
It is very important to keep track of the child's fluid intake during treatment. Two hours before bedtime, it is better for him not to drink at all, and during the day to exclude artificial and highly carbonated drinks. Fruit drinks based on lingonberry and cranberry should also not be included in the diet, because they have a diuretic effect.
Your child should have dinner at least three hours before bedtime. Dinner should include fruit, as well as milk and kefir. The food should be washed down with tea made from yarrow and St. John's wort.
Make sure your child goes to the toilet before going to bed. Leave the pot by the bed overnight. It is better not to turn off the night light, because children are often afraid of the dark, but they are embarrassed to tell their parents about it.
There is no need to wake the child up in the middle of the night. This will interfere with proper rest of the nervous system.
During the period of treatment, the psychological comfort of the child is very important. In no case should you allow the formation of feelings of guilt over a wet bed. You can not punish and scold the baby, because this can lead to neuroticism.
