Some people have probably heard the expressions: "He is a real gentleman", or "He acted not like a gentleman." In the first case, the phrase sounds approving, in the second - condemning. Even without understanding the meaning of this definition, one can instinctively guess that not every person is called a gentleman, that this title must be earned. But what is still included in the concept of "gentleman"?
Instructions
Step 1
Where did the concept of "gentleman" come from, what was its original meaning? The term "gentleman" itself is of mixed Anglo-French origin. It is composed of the French word gentil, which means "noble", and the English word man, which translated into Russian sounds like "man", "man". That is, literally translated, this word means "noble man." Since this term originated in the late Middle Ages, when the origin was still very important, the distinction between terms such as "noble" and "ignoble" classes was clearly maintained, only a male representative from an aristocratic environment could be called a gentleman. However, at the beginning of the Victorian era, the meaning of this term expanded, became more liberal. Among the gentlemen, in addition to aristocrats, were also ranked those men who had the opportunity not to work, but to live on interest from capital or on an inheritance inherited from close relatives.
Step 2
How did the meaning of the term "gentleman" change later? Since the second half of the 19th century, the term "gentleman" has changed significantly again. Now it had not only direct but also figurative meaning. The address "gentleman" was now used in relation to almost any man, if his behavior met a number of criteria. For example, he had to strictly observe the generally accepted norms of decency, be polite and gallant (especially with women), not allow unworthy actions, not abuse his rights, advantages, always keep his word. It was from that time that the expression appeared: "I give you the word of a gentleman!". To break a promise, sealed with such a word, was to incur dishonor and general condemnation. A gentleman will never offend his loved one, he will not offend a woman, especially a child. He always dresses tastefully and smells good.
Step 3
Currently, the term "gentleman" is used, as a rule, in a figurative sense. Although, for example, in English, this term still denotes a person who is sufficiently wealthy, who has the opportunity to lead the way of life, to engage in the hobby that he likes, without using it as his main income (that is, remaining an amateur, but without becoming a professional).
