According to Russian law, former spouses after a divorce have the right to both bear a common surname and return those that they had before marriage, without asking for the consent of each other. The procedure for changing your surname is simple. If you made the decision to return your maiden name before the divorce, please indicate this in your divorce application. Your maiden name will be indicated in the divorce certificate that will be given to you at the registry office. An additional application for a change of surname is not required.
Step 3
If you decide to change your surname after the marriage has been dissolved, the procedure will be different. Contact the registry office at your place of residence with an application for a change of surname. There you can also see a sample application and a list of required documents. You will need a passport, divorce certificate and birth certificates of children. It will take a month to process your application. In rare cases, the consideration can be delayed, but not more than two months. After this period, you will receive an official document - a certificate of name change. All other documents in which your marriage name appeared are also subject to correction. Therefore, you will be given a new divorce certificate and birth certificates for children.
Step 4
The next point is getting a passport in your new surname. Do not miss the deadline - you must contact the passport office no later than a month after receiving the certificate of name change.
To obtain a new passport, you will need to bring a receipt for payment of the state fee, a certificate of name change, a divorce certificate, your old passport and two photographs (size 35x45 mm). Fill out the appropriate application form, attach the required documents and certify the application with the signature of the bank desk employee. The new passport will be ready within 2 weeks.
