Symphysis is the scientific name for the symphysis pubis or pubis. During pregnancy, it softens to make the baby's path easier. These changes are considered the norm and do not bother the expectant mother in any way. However, there are times when the process does not go according to the script.
Excessive softening of the joints leads to their hypermobility. As a result. the pubic bones diverge too far, causing pain in the woman. This condition is called symphysitis.
Symphysitis reasons
The exact causes of symphysitis are still unknown. According to one theory, this is due to a lack of calcium in the body of the expectant mother, according to another - with an excess of the hormone relaxin.
At risk are women suffering from hereditary diseases of the musculoskeletal system, having received pelvic injuries in the past, leading a sedentary lifestyle. Also contributing factors are repeated childbirth and bearing a large baby (weighing more than 4 kg).
Symphysitis symptoms
At the initial stage of the disease, a woman experiences pain in the pubic area when walking and climbing stairs. At this stage, the symptoms of symphysitis are often attributed to natural changes in the body and are left unattended.
Further development of the disease increases pain. They torture a woman not only while walking, but also while sitting or lying down. To roll over on the other side, raise a leg, get off the couch, the expectant mother needs to make an effort and be patient. The pubis begins to swell.
Launched symphysitis leads to the fact that the patient has a duck gait. The steps become short and heavy. The pregnant woman waddles, stepping from one leg to the other. If measures are not taken in time, the joint may eventually break. This threatens with complications during childbirth, long treatment and several weeks of bed rest.
Prevention of symphysitis
Prevention of symphysitis is reduced to a timely visit to an obstetrician-gynecologist, early registration (for up to 12 weeks), and scheduled ultrasound.
Wear a special prenatal brace that will relieve stress on the joints and bones of the pelvis, as well as the muscles of the back. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day of stretching exercises designed specifically for pregnant women. Avoid sitting for too long, strenuous physical activity. Give yourself some rest during the long walk.
Include more protein and calcium-rich foods in your diet, and limit fats and carbohydrates. Ask your doctor for advice on prenatal vitamins.
