Pregnancy lasting more than 42 weeks is called post-term by gynecologists. If you have a similar situation, do not panic and consult a doctor - he will figure out what is the reason for this situation and how it should be resolved in your case.
Instructions
Step 1
Find out if you have symptoms of a real post-term pregnancy. These include not only the gestational age longer than the date of delivery established by the doctors, but also such a phenomenon as oligohydramnios. In this case, the volume of amniotic fluid is reduced, and the belly of the pregnant woman may decrease by several centimeters. This process is dangerous for the fetus, so if you notice anything like this, see your doctor immediately. Also, an indicator may be the beginning of the release of real milk from the breast, and not specific colostrum.
Step 2
Get the required tests. In particular, this stage of pregnancy can be determined using a blood test. Additionally, amnioscopy is often performed - a study of the quality and quantity of amniotic fluid. During this examination, the doctor also checks the condition of the vagina and cervix. You can also listen to the child's heart to determine its condition.
Step 3
When a pregnancy is recognized as post-term with a danger to the health of the child, the doctor stimulates labor with the help of special drugs. In rare cases, if this does not help, a decision may be made to have a caesarean section.
Step 4
If you have had a post-term pregnancy protected, inform your doctor before giving birth to your next baby. In this case, timely measures to stimulate labor activity will be taken as early as 40 weeks of pregnancy.
