The first diapers appeared in the middle of the 20th century. But because of their imperfection, they went unnoticed by young parents. In 1959, the first Pampers diaper was born on the basis of past experience.
The history of the emergence of diapers began in 1949. Mother of many children, deputy editor of Vogue magazine, literary critic Marion Donovan invented waterproof panties for her babies, which were called "boatman". As a material that absorbed the liquid, ordinary wood sawdust was used. Having quickly understood their main advantages, a whole production of these products was opened.
Having received an income of a million dollars for her invention, Marion Donovan decided to develop her business further in this direction. Instead of sawdust, she began to use absorbent paper. The resulting construction was fastened with a safety clasp. The only drawback was the moisture-repellent layer, which did not allow air to pass through, so in the heat it led to irritation and diaper rash. Young parents of that time reacted with suspicion to the invention, since they found disposable bowlers impractical.
The second renaissance of diapers
About 10 years later, in 1959, Victor Mills, an engineer at Procter & Gamble, became interested in the invention. He suggested using superabsorbent as an absorbent layer and abandoning the dense plastic that had caused so much trouble for parents in the past. This is how the familiar "diaper" appeared, which by the end of the 60s had become very popular. At first, such products were produced with two types of fasteners: Velcro and buttons, but later it was decided to completely abandon the buttons. By 1961, Victor Mills had become a real millionaire and retired. It should be noted that he lived for a hundred years, receiving a lot of money for his invention.
Why exactly "diaper"?
Despite the fact that Pampers is just a brand of diapers, the name quickly came into use. The fact is that it was chosen for a reason. The word itself comes from an English verb and is translated as undead, pamper. In the minds of people very quickly the name became associated with the image of a baby, so any diapers are still called "diapers".
How did the first diapers appear in Russia?
The prototype of these products was invented in the USSR during the preparation of the first manned space flights. Such products for children were not known until 1990. It was at this time that the first Pampers brand diapers, produced in America and Sweden, began to be imported. After their success in our market, four years later, other brands of diapers appear on the shelves.
