A brain cyst in newborns most often resolves in the first year of life. But there are also types of formations that need to be removed. In this case, various medical approaches can be used. The reasons why cysts appear have not yet been precisely established.
Almost every third baby has a brain cyst. It is a small bubble that is filled with liquid. Pathology can appear on almost any part of the brain.
What brain cysts are found in newborn babies?
Today, three types of this pathology are known:
- cysts of the choroid plexus;
- subepidendimal type;
- arachnoid type.
The first type is usually diagnosed in the fetus. Such formations, as a rule, disappear on their own after the baby is born. If the cyst of the choroid plexus appeared in extrauterine life, then this may be due to an infection or an inflammatory process that took place in a woman while carrying a child. A subependymal cyst appears due to insufficient blood circulation in the brain. Therefore, doctors prescribe additional examinations. With a lack of oxygen, some tissues die off, and a cavity filled with liquid appears in their place.
An arachnoid cyst can result from an inflammatory disorder of hemorrhage or meningitis. Why cysts appear, doctors still do not know for sure. Most often they are associated with diseases of the mother during gestation, difficult childbirth, the presence of herpes.
Diagnosis of the disease
For the first time, a cyst is detected during ultrasound diagnostics. Usually it is done before the fontanelle is overgrown. This examination method is harmless to the child. If necessary, a neonatologist can prescribe an MRI and CT scan. With their help, you can get more accurate information about exactly where the cyst is located, what size and shape it has.
Is it necessary to treat a brain cyst in newborns?
If we are talking about choroid plexus formations, subependymal type, then constant monitoring is necessary. Therapies are not used for these forms. After some time, the brain tissue regenerates itself. If the cyst is large, then the position of the surrounding tissues changes. This can trigger seizures, which can become more prolonged and intense over time. In this case, as with an arachnoid cyst, surgery may be required. For this, microneurosurgical, bypass, endoscopic surgery can be performed.
In some cases, doctors prescribe nootropic drugs that improve blood circulation in the brain, massage. Frequent walks with the newborn, the correct daily routine have a beneficial effect on the condition.
